Yearly bonus
Unlike some countries, Canada does not have mandatory yearly bonuses (like Germany's 13th-month salary).
However, many companies offer:
- Annual performance bonus: 5-20% of salary (usually for professional roles)
- Holiday bonus: Some companies give small bonuses in December
- Profit-sharing: Company shares profits with employees
Bonuses are usually specified in your employment contract. You pay income tax on all bonuses.
Signing bonus
Some companies offer a signing bonus (also called a relocation bonus or sign-on bonus). This is a one-time payment when you accept the job.
- Typical range: $2,000 - $10,000 (can be higher for senior roles)
- Sometimes paid with first paycheck, sometimes after 30-90 days
- May need to repay if you leave company within 1 year
- You pay income tax on signing bonuses
You can negotiate for a signing bonus even if not offered initially.
Relocation assistance
Some companies offer relocation assistance to help you move to Canada:
- Fixed amount: Company gives you $5,000 - $15,000 to cover moving costs
- Reimbursement: Company refunds your actual moving expenses (flights, shipping, temporary accommodation)
- Temporary housing: Company pays for 1-3 months of temporary accommodation
If you don't get relocation assistance, your moving costs may be tax-deductible if you moved at least 40km closer to your new job.

💡 Total compensation
When comparing job offers, look at total compensation, not just salary:
Example:
- Job A: $80,000 salary, no benefits
- Job B: $75,000 salary + full benefits + 5% RRSP match + $5,000 signing bonus
Job B total value: $75,000 + $3,000 (benefits) + $3,750 (RRSP) + $5,000 (signing) = $86,750 in year 1
