Economic immigration is designed to attract skilled workers, tradespeople, and business people who can contribute to Canada's economy. This is the main pathway for most immigrants.
π― Express Entry (Federal)
Express Entry is Canada's main system for managing applications for permanent residence under three federal economic programs. It's fast (6 months processing), competitive, and entirely online. β Read complete Express Entry guide
Express Entry manages these three programs:
1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- For skilled workers with foreign work experience
- At least 1 year continuous skilled work in past 10 years
- CLB 7 language level (IELTS 6.0 equivalent)
- High school diploma or higher (foreign credentials need ECA)
- Most common pathway for international applicants
2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- For workers with Canadian work experience
- At least 1 year skilled work in Canada in past 3 years
- Must have worked legally (with valid work permit)
- Lower language requirements (CLB 5-7 depending on job level)
- Popular with international students and temporary workers
3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- For qualified tradespeople
- At least 2 years work experience in skilled trade
- Job offer or certificate of qualification in Canada
- Lower language requirements (CLB 4-5)
- For electricians, welders, carpenters, plumbers, etc.
πΊοΈ Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
Each province and territory (except Quebec and Nunavut) runs its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) designed to meet their specific labor market and economic needs.
Why PNPs are attractive:
- Lower competition: More pathways than federal programs
- Job-specific streams: Target in-demand occupations
- No Express Entry needed: Some streams are "base" PNPs (separate from Express Entry)
- +600 CRS points: If aligned with Express Entry, nomination virtually guarantees ITA
- Lower requirements: Some streams have lower language or education requirements
Major provinces with PNPs: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and more.
βοΈ Quebec Immigration (Separate System)
Quebec operates its own immigration system independent of federal programs. If you want to live in Quebec, you must apply through Quebec's programs.
Common Quebec programs:
- Regular Skilled Worker Program (RSWP): Points-based system similar to Express Entry
- Quebec Experience Program (PEQ): For graduates and temporary workers in Quebec
- Quebec Entrepreneur Program: For business people
Key differences:
- Two-stage process: Quebec selection certificate (CSQ) first, then federal PR application
- French language strongly favored (French ability gives significant points)
- Different selection criteria than federal programs
