NSCDC uncovers illegal sale of rifles by its personnel
Several personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been arrested over alleged diversion and illegal sale of service rifles. According to spokesperson Babawale Afolabi, investigations revealed that rifles were stolen, sold, and records falsified to conceal the crimes. The Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’s SIS) led the probe, resulting in the recovery of weapons and confessional statements. Disciplinary actions have been concluded and legal proceedings are set to begin.
What happened
- Babawale Afolabi stated that an NSCDC personnel was arrested for removing an AK-47 from his post and selling it for N700,000 in Otukpo, Benue.
- The rifle was later resold to an illicit arms buyer for N800,000.
- Another investigation uncovered the diversion and sale of two G3 rifles by a senior officer in the Adamawa command, who falsified armoury records to hide the theft.
- The Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, has directed the Directorate of Legal Services to begin legal proceedings against all suspects.
- The squad also intercepted a telecommunication vandalism syndicate, recovering stolen equipment and seeking a 60-day remand order to apprehend fleeing suspects.
