NDLEA arrests businessman and intercepts multiple drug shipments
A 30-year-old Italy-based businessman, Joseph Cyril, was arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) after ingesting 98 wraps of cocaine at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. The NDLEA also intercepted several other drug consignments in Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Edo, Abia, and at the Tincan Port Complex. Multiple suspects, including Felicia Thompson, Buba Jamilu, Sanusi Ibrahim, Chibuike Charles, and Adome Claude Sikuru, were arrested in connection with various drug-related offenses. NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) praised the agency’s officers for their efforts and encouraged them to maintain a balanced approach to drug control.
What happened
- Joseph Cyril was arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on Sunday, August 2, 2026, after ingesting 98 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.510kg.
- Investigations revealed Cyril arrived in Nigeria from Italy on July 13, 2026, and ingested the cocaine at a hotel in Awka before his attempted flight to Europe.
- The NDLEA intercepted 1.2kg of cocaine in 25 phone chargers destined for Saudi Arabia and 500g of cocaine in a backpack headed to Italy on Monday, August 3.
- A consignment of 2.3kg of Loud cannabis from the United States was seized in Lagos on Tuesday, August 4, and 65 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 604.5kg were recovered in Edo State on Wednesday, August 5.
- Other arrests and seizures included 147kg of skunk in Ondo on Monday, August 3, 731.03kg of cannabis in Oyo on August 3, 7kg of skunk in Abia on Thursday, August 6, and 88.5kg of skunk in Lagos on Saturday, August 8.
