Groups pledge support to address out-of-school children in Kaduna
Save the Children International and UNICEF have renewed their commitment to help the Kaduna State Government tackle the crisis of out-of-school children. At a recent event, both organisations highlighted the importance of data-driven interventions to ensure every child has access to quality education. Duncan Harvey of Save the Children and Dr Gerida Birukila of UNICEF emphasised the need for collaboration among government, donors, and communities. The initiative aims to target vulnerable children, especially those living with disabilities.

- Save the Children International and UNICEF are working with the Kaduna State Government to address the out-of-school children crisis.
- A mapping exercise identified 187,719 out-of-school children across Kaduna’s 23 local government areas, with 60.2% never enrolled in school.
- The project has already returned over 100,000 children to classrooms and distributed 53,013 learner kits and assistive devices to vulnerable children.
- Major barriers include poverty, teacher shortages, inadequate facilities, insecurity, disability, child labour, and harmful social norms.
