Ogun fish farmers plead for urgent government help after devastating floods
Fish farmers in Ijebu-Ife and Ijebu-Igbo are seeking immediate intervention from Bola Tinubu and Dapo Abiodun after severe floods destroyed their livelihoods. The Ijebuland Fish Farmers’ Association says over 150 farmers lost investments valued at more than N700m due to flash floods caused by torrential rainfall between July 13 and 14, 2026. The group highlights that many affected farmers are still recovering from previous losses and have received little to no compensation. They are calling for emergency relief, compensation, and improved flood management infrastructure to prevent future disasters.
What happened
- The floods, triggered by two days of heavy rainfall between July 13 and 14, 2026, destroyed fish ponds, catfish, and production assets worth over N700m.
- Oluyemi Oludayo, secretary of the association, said the disaster affected farmers at Mojalake Fish Farm Cluster in Ijebu-Ife and several communities in Ijebu-Igbo.
- The association blamed the flooding on blocked waterways, inadequate drainage, and poor urban planning, and urged the government to dredge the Ogbere Stream and improve drainage systems.
- Previous flooding incidents in 2022 and 2025 also caused significant losses, with over N500m and N300m lost respectively, but affected farmers have yet to receive compensation.
- Hafeez Bada, Isah Hussaini, Lazarus Okole, and Eko John Nicholas appealed for urgent government support, including relief materials, compensation, and routine river dredging to protect their livelihoods.
