Gunmen abduct school staff and students during NECO exams in Kogi
Several people were abducted during an attack at Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina, Kogi State. The victims include a principal, a NECO ad hoc staff member, and four students who were sitting for their exams. The Kogi State Police Command, led by spokesperson ASP Salisu Oyiza, confirmed the incident and said that security agencies have launched a rescue operation. In a separate incident, the police also confirmed the abduction of a corpse being transported for burial.
What happened
- The abduction at Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, Dekina, occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at about 5:25 p.m. while students were writing the NECO examination.
- The victims include four students, the school principal, and a NECO ad hoc staff member.
- Police and other security agencies have rescued one of the abducted students and are continuing efforts to rescue the remaining victims.
- The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, the Brigade Commander, and the State Security Adviser are visiting the scene for assessment.
- In a related incident, police confirmed that on 9 July 2026, armed hoodlums abducted occupants of a bus transporting a corpse, which was later recovered and deposited at Elemona Mortuary, Ejule.
