Elderly men accused of supplying drugs to Abia students arrested by NDLEA
Two elderly men, Godfrey Orji and Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, have been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for allegedly supplying illicit drugs to secondary school students in Umuahia, Abia State. Obiora was apprehended after being found with opioids at his patent medicine store, while Orji was caught supplying drugs to students at Saint Silas Secondary School. The agency stated that both suspects will be prosecuted, and the affected students have been placed on counselling and rehabilitation programmes. The NDLEA also reported several other drug seizures and arrests across different states.
What happened
- Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, 75, was arrested on June 19 at his medicine store in Umuahia with 4.64kg of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam.
- Godfrey Orji, 84, was caught by security guards supplying drugs to students at Saint Silas Secondary School and handed over to the police, who transferred him to NDLEA on Thursday, 18th June.
- A 15-year-old student admitted that Orji regularly supplied him with drugs, which he also sold to other students.
- The NDLEA announced other operations, including the interception of synthetic cannabinoids and cannabis in Lagos, and raids in Kogi, Ekiti, Oyo, and Edo states.
- NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa commended the agency’s officers and urged them to continue their efforts in combating drug trafficking and abuse.
