Lagos launches N2.5m tree-planting prize to fight urban heat
The Lagos State Government has introduced a N2.5 million prize for the best-performing tree as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and combat rising urban heat. Olalekan Rotimi-Akodu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, announced the initiative during the World Environment Day celebration at Johnson Jakande Tinubu Park, Ikeja. The programme, themed “Inspired by Nature for Climate, For Our Future,” encourages residents to nurture trees and participate in climate action. Experts highlighted that Lagos remains vulnerable to climate-related threats, despite ongoing efforts to plant millions of trees and improve green infrastructure.
