Over 10,000 arrested for environmental offences in Lagos
Lagos State has intensified its crackdown on environmental offenders, resulting in thousands of arrests. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, revealed the figures during a ministerial briefing. The state has also made progress in waste management, recycling, and climate governance. Initiatives include new partnerships, infrastructure upgrades, and enforcement of existing bans.
What happened
- Tokunbo Wahab announced that 10,634 environmental offenders were arrested across Lagos within one year.
- Offences included illegal highway crossing, street trading, environmental pollution, cart pushing, open defecation, and improper waste disposal.
- The state commissioned the Ikosi Waste-to-Energy Biodigester Plant to convert organic waste into electricity, cooking gas, and fertiliser.
- Lagos sustained its ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics, removing over 137,530kg of PET plastics through recycling.
- The ministry maintained and cleaned drainage channels and carried out emergency flood abatement operations across the state.
