Lagos arrests hundreds for waste offences in enforcement drive
The Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to enforce environmental laws, resulting in the arrest of 931 individuals for waste-related offences. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, highlighted these achievements during a ministerial press briefing. The ministry also focused on improving air quality and promoting cleaner technologies. These initiatives aim to ensure a healthier and cleaner environment for residents.
What happened
- Tokunbo Wahab announced that 931 people were arrested for waste offences during environmental enforcement operations.
- The ministry inspected 2,251 sites, issued 1,711 contravention notices, and sealed 239 sites.
- Over 650 tonnes of construction waste were evacuated across the state.
- The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency completed 114 installations of air quality sensors and rehabilitated pollution abatement facilities.
- Cleaner fish processing technology was introduced at Ago Egun to reduce smoke emissions and protect local processors’ health.
