FCT launches free health insurance for Kuje inmates
The Federal Capital Territory Administration has started a free health insurance programme for inmates at the Kuje correctional facility. Over 1,500 inmates are expected to benefit from this initiative, which aims to improve access to healthcare for those in custody. The programme was introduced under the directive of Nyesom Wike and is part of efforts to ensure inclusive healthcare for all residents. Dr Adedolapo Fasawe emphasized that the scheme is designed to uphold health as a fundamental right.
What we know
- The health insurance scheme began at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje and will later extend to other facilities in Gwagwalada and Suleja.
- Inmates receive free medical consultations, laboratory tests, surgeries, emergency care, and essential drugs.
- The outreach included health education, National Identification Number registration, and support for vocational training activities.
- Over 550 inmates were screened for hypertension, diabetes, and malaria, with more than 130 receiving corrective eyeglasses.
- Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo was commended for prioritising healthcare in correctional institutions, and inmates expressed gratitude for the new services.
