Foreign nationals rescued from trafficking syndicate in Lagos
In Lagos, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps uncovered a suspected human trafficking and fraud syndicate in Badagry, rescuing 17 foreign victims and arresting four suspects. The victims, mainly from West and Central Africa, were allegedly lured with false job promises and forced into a fraudulent scheme. Mr Adedotun Keshinro, the Lagos State NSCDC Commandant, stated that the operation followed a report from a victim who was deceived by a Facebook acquaintance. The syndicate reportedly operated multiple camps and subjected victims to extortion and inhumane treatment.
What happened
- Mr Adedotun Keshinro said the NSCDC raided a camp in Badagry after a victim from the Central African Republic reported being deceived and detained.
- The victims were allegedly forced to join a fraudulent internet-based scheme called QNET, with their belongings seized and minimal stipends given.
- Four suspects—three Togolese and one Beninese—were arrested, and 17 victims (12 males, five females) were rescued during the operation.
- The suspects allegedly tried to bribe operatives with 130,000 CFA, which was rejected and recovered as evidence.
- The NSCDC confirmed that the suspects have been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and prosecution.
