Anambra doctor freed after abduction from hospital

Dr Edwin Emegakor, Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital in Nkpor, Anambra State, has regained his freedom after being abducted from his hospital. His release was confirmed by Dr Princeton Okam, Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Anambra State Branch. The abduction had prompted the association to threaten an indefinite strike if their colleague was not released within 48 hours. Dr Emegakor is reported to be healthy and reunited with his family.
What happened
- Dr Edwin Emegakor was abducted from his hospital on May 7 by unidentified gunmen alleged to be in security uniforms.
- Security operatives, medical staff, and other workers at the facility were held at gunpoint and had their phones confiscated during the incident.
- The Nigeria Medical Association, Anambra State chapter, threatened to begin an indefinite strike if Dr Emegakor was not released within 48 hours.
- His release was confirmed by Dr Princeton Okam, who credited police operatives for assisting in the rescue.
- The planned strike action was overtaken by the doctor's release, and an emergency meeting was scheduled to decide on calling off the strike.
