Windstorm leaves thousands homeless in Niger State
A severe windstorm has destroyed over 1,000 houses across several communities in Niger State, displacing many residents. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency, led by Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the incident and stated that rapid assessment operations are underway. Areas such as Mokwa, Bida, and other local government regions were among the worst affected. The agency is working with local authorities to determine the full extent of the damage and the needs of those impacted.
What happened
- The windstorm affected multiple local government areas, with Mokwa and Bida being the hardest hit.
- Over 1,000 houses were destroyed or damaged in Mokwa, including communities like Sawmill, Kpege Wayata, Kpege, Station Girigi, and others.
- Several wards in Bida, such as Cheniyan, Nasarafu, Bariki, Kyari, Dokoza, Masaga A, and Masaga B, also suffered significant damage.
- Additional incidents were reported in Lavun, Katcha, Gbako, and Mariga, with more than 100 houses destroyed in Durgu community, Mariga LGA.
- Abdullahi Baba-Arah said detailed assessments are ongoing to determine the scale of damage and provide assistance to victims.
