Six arrested in Benin City for alleged vandalism of public property

At least six scavengers, known locally as ‘condemn iron’ dealers, have been arrested by the Edo State Government for allegedly vandalising state-owned infrastructure, including schools in Benin City. Eugene Okoloise, Chairman of the Edo State Public Property Protection Committee, warned that the government would not tolerate further destruction of public assets. Leaders of the scavengers have reportedly agreed to repair the vandalised schools or risk being banned from operating in the state. The Chairman of the Scrap Dealers Association, Alhaji Abbas Garuba, outlined new measures to regulate members and prevent further incidents.
