NDLEA seizes N1.8bn worth of drugs and honours officers in Edo
The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted illicit drugs valued at N1.8bn in the first quarter of the year. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the state commander, revealed that 18,380kg of drugs were recovered from 104 suspects. The agency also secured 36 convictions and intensified anti-drug education efforts. Several officers, journalists, and a legal aid lawyer were recognised for their contributions to the fight against narcotics.
What happened
- Mitchell Ofoyeju announced the seizure of 18,380kg of drugs, including cannabis, psychotropic substances, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and codeine syrup.
- 104 suspected traffickers were arrested, comprising 71 males and 33 females.
- The agency destroyed 12,556kg of cannabis found on 10 farms covering 5.02260 hectares.
- 36 convictions were secured at the Federal High Court in Benin City, with 32 males and four females convicted.
- Awards were presented to 10 officers, four journalists, and one legal aid lawyer for their outstanding roles in combating drug trafficking.
