Lagos task force detains five for alleged roadside extortion
Operatives from the Lagos State Task Force have apprehended five individuals accused of extorting motorists along major highways. The suspects reportedly targeted drivers whose vehicles broke down, pretending to offer help before demanding money. According to agency spokesperson Raheem Gbadeyan, the arrests followed a tip-off from a vigilant motorist. CSP Adetayo Akerele, the agency chairman, confirmed that the group had been under surveillance due to repeated public complaints.
What happened
- Five suspects, identified as Alade Olarewaju, Oluwadamilare Alabi, Sunday Idowu, Rabiu Ibrahim, and Raji Yusuf, were arrested for allegedly extorting motorists.
- The group reportedly posed as helpers to stranded drivers but would intimidate and demand money from them.
- The suspects had previously evaded arrest and were on the Task Force’s watchlist following numerous complaints.
- Two suspects confessed to targeting trucks and vehicles carrying goods, often threatening to remove vehicle parts to force payments.
- The suspects have been arraigned in court on charges including illegal collection of fees, wilful obstruction, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
