NSCDC rescues pregnant women from alleged baby factory in Imo
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Imo has uncovered an alleged baby factory and rescued five pregnant women. Tochukwu Ogaranya, 52, is in custody along with the women for alleged child trafficking. The NSCDC also rescued five newborn babies from the suspects. Mr Basil Igwebueze, the NSCDC Commandant in Imo, shared these details while briefing newsmen in Owerri.
What happened
- Tochukwu Ogaranya and an alleged accomplice, Godwin Nnamdi, 47, were arrested at an orphanage in Owerri.
- The operation began after an officer saw a pregnant teenager fleeing from the orphanage in the World Bank area of Owerri.
- Five pregnant women, aged between 25 and 33, and five newborn babies were rescued by the NSCDC.
- Ogaranya claimed her orphanage was certified and denied involvement in child trafficking.
- The NSCDC Commandant urged residents to report suspicious activities and said the suspects would be prosecuted.
