NDLEA arrests 56 suspects and destroys cannabis farms in Edo
The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested 56 suspected drug traffickers and seized over 2,000kg of illicit drugs. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the State Commander, revealed these results while presenting the agency’s operational scorecard. The agency also destroyed three cannabis farms and secured 14 convictions. Efforts included public sensitisation and counselling for individuals affected by drug abuse.
What happened
- Mitchell Ofoyeju reported the arrest of 56 suspects, including 34 males and 22 females, at various drug flashpoints.
- The agency seized 2,167.74kg of illicit drugs, mainly Cannabis sativa, and destroyed three cannabis farms in forest locations.
- The prosecution unit secured 14 convictions and filed three new cases, with 96 pending at the Federal High Court in Benin City.
- The Drug Demand Reduction Department counselled 28 clients and conducted three public sensitisation programmes.
- Ofoyeju highlighted challenges with difficult terrain and called for improved logistics to combat drug trafficking effectively.
