Gas supply issues worsen Nigeria’s electricity generation
Nigeria’s electricity output has dropped below 4,000MW due to ongoing gas supply shortages, according to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). The operator reported that several thermal power plants are struggling to operate at optimal capacity because of inadequate gas supply. The shortfall has forced some generating units to shut down, further reducing available electricity. NISO says it is working with generation companies and gas suppliers to address the crisis.

- Between 06:00 hours and 08:00 hours on the same day, several generating units shut down, causing a reduction of about 292MW in available generation.
- An earlier notice in February 2026 reported generation at about 4,300MW, already below capacity due to similar gas shortages.
- Thermal power plants require about 1,588.61 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, but actual supply is only 652.92 million standard cubic feet per day—roughly 40% of the required volume.
- NISO is collaborating with generation companies and gas suppliers to restore fuel supply and maintain grid stability.
