The Onitsha North Local Government Council has started demolishing illegal structures at the Onitsha Main Market. According to the council, the move aims to restore the market’s original masterplan and improve trading conditions. Hon. Anthony Nwora, the Mayor/Chairman of Onitsha North Local Government, signed the official notice. Affected traders were given multiple notices and deadlines to vacate the premises.

- The council issued a notice through the Office of the Mayor, dated February 26, informing traders of the planned demolition.
- An initial 14-day notice expired on February 14, 2026, after which the deadline was extended to February 28, 2026 at the request of the occupants.
- The council stated that demolition could begin anytime from Sunday 1st March 2026.
- Traders were advised to remove their belongings before Sunday 1st March 2026.
- The demolition targets illegal structures at Park 1, Park 2, and Park 3 of the Main Market.
