JNIM raids in Burkina Faso result in heavy casualties
In recent days, Burkina Faso has experienced a surge in deadly attacks linked to Al-Qaeda-affiliated JNIM. The military junta, in power since September 2022, continues to struggle against these armed groups. The latest string of assaults has targeted both military and civilian locations, leaving over 130 people dead. Security analysts highlight the increasing coordination and reach of JNIM across the country’s north and east.
What we know
- JNIM has claimed responsibility for 10 attacks across different regions of Burkina Faso since February 14.
- The deadliest incidents occurred on February 15, targeting Titao’s military base and an ambush in Tandjari, resulting in dozens of soldiers and around 50 forestry officers killed.
- Between 12 and 22 February, a series of large-scale attacks demonstrated a high degree of coordination, with over 130 people killed.
- Attacks have focused on northern and eastern Burkina Faso, areas important for gold mining and smuggling routes.
- The army claims it now controls 74 per cent of national territory and has retaken some 600 villages as of mid-February.
