Nigeria and EU begin talks to boost research and innovation
The European Union and the Federal Republic of Nigeria have started formal negotiations for a Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement. The move aims to strengthen research collaboration and innovation under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy. The agreement is expected to provide a framework for long-term cooperation, benefiting universities, researchers, and innovators in both regions. - The negotiations were launched at Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology in Abuja.
- The agreement will align with the AU-EU Innovation Agenda (2023-2033) and reflects commitments from the 2023 EU-Nigeria Strategic Dialogue and the 2024 EU-Nigeria Summit.
- Gautier Mignot, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, described the launch as historic and strategic, emphasizing existing cooperation under Horizon Europe.
- Kingsley Udeh, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, said the agreement will include a joint science and technical cooperation committee.
- Nigerian entities have participated in 55 Horizon Europe projects and 12 Global Health EDCTP3 projects, receiving significant funding and investment.
