Lagos intensifies crackdown on open defecation, arrests 46 offenders
The Lagos State Government has ramped up enforcement against open defecation, resulting in the arrest of 46 people on Lagos Island. The Anti-Open Defecation Squad carried out early morning operations at known sanitation blackspots. Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, confirmed the arrests in an official statement. The offenders have been transferred to the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps for further action.
What happened
- The Anti-Open Defecation Squad apprehended 46 offenders during coordinated operations on Lagos Island.
- 20th February, 20 people were arrested; 15 more on 21st February; and 11 on 22nd February.
- The operations targeted areas such as Ebute Ero, Apongbon, Isale Eko, Marina, CMS, Obalende, and Adeniji Adele.
- Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin stated that all suspects were taken to the LAGESC headquarters in Oshodi for investigation and prosecution.
- The enforcement aims to eliminate open defecation and protect public health in Lagos.
