Kaduna residents call for action after killings and abductions
Residents of the Akurmi community in Kaduna State are raising concerns about ongoing killings and kidnappings in their area. Yakubu Maigamo, President of the Akurmi Development Association, described the situation as dire and called for urgent intervention. The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union also warned of renewed security threats and destruction of farmlands. Several communities have been affected, with families forced to pay ransoms and abandon their homes.
What happened
- No fewer than 59 people have remained in captivity since October 2025 following a series of attacks in the Akurmi community.
- At least 12 residents were killed and dozens abducted in coordinated attacks, forcing many to flee their homes and farmlands.
- An attack in October 2025 on Karku-Ningi community in Kauru LGA left four dead and nine abducted; another attack in November 2025 on Gidan-Waya, Jan-Tsauni, and Mai-Yamma communities resulted in four more deaths and 13 abductions.
- The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union reported the killing of former councillor Auwal Magaji Kwaga and destruction of over 182 hectares of farmland during the 2025 farming season.
- About 177 worshippers were initially believed abducted during an attack on Kurmin Wali community, with 80 later confirmed to have escaped.
