Power grid collapses again, causing widespread outage
The national power grid suffered another collapse, marking the second incident in four days. Power generation dropped drastically, leaving distribution companies unable to supply electricity. EkoDisCo and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) both confirmed the outages and ongoing restoration efforts. Multiple transmission lines reportedly tripped, leading to the total collapse.
What we know
- The national grid crashed again on Tuesday, with power generation falling to 39 megawatts at 11 a.m. from 3,825 MW at 10 a.m.
- EkoDisCo informed customers of a system collapse at 10:48 hrs, resulting in a loss of power supply.
- This is the second grid collapse in January 2026 and the third in less than one month.
- The grid previously collapsed on December 29, 2025, and on Friday, January 23, 2026.
- NISO confirmed that the outage occurred at about 12:40 p.m. on Friday, following the tripping of several 330kV transmission lines.
