Police arrest suspected robbers linked to banned group in Anambra
Two suspected armed robbers connected to a proscribed secessionist group have been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command after a gun battle at Enugwu-Agidi Junction. The operation, carried out by the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, led to the recovery of weapons and other items. SP Tochukwu Ikenga described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to tackle crime in the state. The police are intensifying efforts to apprehend other fleeing gang members.
What happened
- The Anambra State Police Command arrested two suspected armed robbers after a two-hour gunfight at Enugwu-Agidi Junction in Dunukofia Local Government Area.
- Police recovered one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition, 15 live cartridges, assorted criminal charms, a cult red beret, and a black Toyota Highlander vehicle.
- One suspect confessed the gang was involved in a previous attack on the convoy of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and is linked to the Vikings Confraternity.
- SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has directed operatives to intensify efforts to arrest the remaining gang members.
- Hospitals and medical facilities have been advised to report anyone with gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.
