Death toll from Lagos GNI building fire climbs to six
A tragic fire at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island has claimed six lives, according to the Lagos State Government. The blaze, which started on the fourth floor, destroyed property and left many traders displaced. Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, confirmed the updated fatality count after another body was recovered. Several people remain injured, and some are still believed to be trapped under the rubble.
What happened
- The fire at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House began on December 24 and quickly spread through the building.
- As of December 31, 2025, the confirmed death toll stands at six, with one more body recovered on Day 8 of rescue operations.
- Gbenga Omotoso reported that 13 people were injured, including eight males—one a firefighter—who were hospitalised, while five others received first aid and were released.
- Victims identified include Elo Chukwu, Omeigbo Chuwuebuka, Omeigbo Chukwudubem, Kayode Omoniyi, Ikechukwudi Asobi, Murphy Aborinwa, Onyeka Obinwa, Mercy Ukamaka, Taofeeq Opera, Chiding, and two of his boys.
- Several market assistants are still reportedly trapped, and their identities have not yet been confirmed.
