
Unilag alumni pay tribute to late journalist Tunde Awobiyi
The University of Lagos Alumni Association has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of veteran journalist Tunde Awobiyi. The former Sunday Times editor and ex-National Publicity Secretary of the alumni association was remembered for his significant contributions to journalism and the UNILAG community. Awobiyi was also a Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and served as acting Chief Press Secretary to Bola Tinubu during his time as Lagos Governor. He passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 28, 2025 at the age of 74.

- Tunde Awobiyi’s death was announced by the UNILAG Alumni Association through a statement by Funmi Falobi.
- He began his journalism career at The PUNCH Newspapers and later became Editor of Sunday Times and General Manager, Publications, for Daily Times.
- Awobiyi was acting Chief Press Secretary to Bola Tinubu when he was Lagos State Governor.
- He was a 1978 Mass Communication graduate of the University of Lagos and previously served as Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Union in the 1975/76 session.
- He is survived by his wife, Ruth Awobiyi, their children, and grandchildren.
