DSS arrests two suspects over Cross River professor’s murder
Three operatives from the Department of State Services have apprehended two suspects linked to the abduction and killing of Professor Ekanem Philip-Ephraim in Cross River State. The suspects, Patrick Essien Etim and Bassey Antiha Asuquo, were detained at a medical facility while allegedly planning another kidnapping. The duo reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted to other kidnappings and vandalism. Another suspect, Isaac Ekpeyong, was also arrested in connection with the case.
What happened
- Ekanem Philip-Ephraim was abducted on July 13, 2023, from her office in Calabar by armed men posing as patients.
- The suspects were arrested by DSS operatives on December 27 at a medical facility in Cross River State.
- The alleged gang leader, Patrick Essien Etim, 23, and his accomplice, Bassey Antiha Asuquo, 40, confessed to killing the professor after collecting ransom payments.
- Their arrest followed a two-year investigation and tracking by the DSS.
- The suspects also admitted to other kidnappings and vandalising electricity cables, with Isaac Ekpeyong also apprehended.
