Two former Enugu bankers sentenced for pension fund theft
Two ex-bankers, Sani Aferokhe and Hillary Odo, have been sentenced by the Enugu State High Court for diverting pension funds. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured their conviction on multiple charges, including conspiracy, forgery, and stealing. The offences involved the criminal diversion of N10.3 million belonging to pensioners. Both individuals were former employees of Intercontinental Bank Plc, now Access Bank Plc.
What happened
- The Enugu State High Court sentenced Sani Aferokhe and Hillary Odo to a combined 12-year jail term for diverting pensioners' funds.
- The duo was arraigned on January 18, 2016, on a 15-count charge including conspiracy, forgery, and stealing.
- One charge stated that on or about November 21, 2012, in Nsukka, they stole N4.4m from a customer’s account.
- Another charge alleged that on or about October 12, 2012, they stole N2.1m from a customer’s account while working at the bank.
- The court found them guilty on several counts, with sentences including five years’ imprisonment per count and an option of a N100,000 fine per count.
